Spirituality and Mental Health: The Connection

Spirituality and religion are pillars of support for many individuals, providing a sense of comfort and stability. The mental health advantages of engaging in spiritual practices are extensively recognized. For those who draw strength from their spiritual beliefs, collaborating with an online therapist who shares similar values can significantly impact their mental and emotional well-being.

“People often seek counselors or therapists who resonate with their identities, including religion,” states Amy Marschall, PsyD, a clinical psychologist at Resiliency Mental Health. She emphasizes the importance of individuals feeling understood and supported by their therapist, particularly in terms of faith. A Christian individual, for instance, may feel more at ease working with a counselor who shares their Christian beliefs and comprehends how these beliefs shape their life, just as individuals following other religions may seek therapists who share their faith.

Exploring Online Christian Therapy Services

The realm of online therapy has dramatically expanded recently, offering convenience and cost-effectiveness to those seeking counseling, including Christians looking for therapeutic support. Conducting an in-depth evaluation, we tested 80 leading teletherapy providers and collected feedback from 100 users from each. Additionally, we reached out to these companies for detailed insights and consulted experts in the field to ascertain the unique strengths of each provider. Below are the top-ranked companies in offering online Christian therapy services.

The Top 6 Online Christian Counseling Platforms

Disclaimer

Christian counseling can be beneficial for many individuals seeking therapy, but it may not suit everyone. In the United States, counselors offering faith-based counseling are not mandated to hold state licensure, although most of the platforms we evaluated only engage with fully licensed providers.

Furthermore, individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+ should review a company’s statement of faith and/or code of ethics to determine if their clinicians are LGBTQIA+ competent and supportive. It is common for many faith-based services to endorse heterosexual marriage and traditional gender norms.

It is important to note that online therapy may not be suitable for individuals experiencing a crisis, suicidal thoughts, or those dealing with severe mental health conditions.

Privacy

Before enrolling in an online therapy service, it is essential to review the privacy policies to determine if they adhere to HIPAA regulations and if they disclose private data to external entities. The Enlightened Mind advises users to be cautious as the FTC and government officials have expressed concerns regarding the security and ethical implications of online therapy platforms in relation to the collection and usage of personal health information.

In our evaluation, along with feedback from 100 users, we found that The Enlightened Mind offers excellent value and features compassionate therapists who respond promptly to your needs.

Key Features:

  • Licensed therapists offer various therapeutic approaches
  • Convenient communication options available
  • User-friendly and visually appealing website
  • Easy process for switching therapists if needed
  • Specializes in Christian counseling

Considerations:

  • Customer service may be impacted by the company’s large size
  • Therapist matching is done for you
  • Some users reported surge pricing practices

The transition of Faithful Counseling, previously under The Enlightened Mind, occurred on November 1, 2023, when The Enlightened Mind announced the integration of Faithful Counseling into their platform.

While Faithful Counseling no longer exists as a separate entity, The Enlightened Mind continues to offer Christian-based therapy services. Our evaluation included testing The Enlightened Mind’s Christian therapy services during the Faithful Counseling era.

Testing Faithful Counseling and BetterHelp Services

We decided to test Faithful Counseling’s individual therapy services in California and Kentucky as well as BetterHelp’s individual therapy services in New York, Missouri, Massachusetts, California, Kansas, and the U.K. We were able to see the integration of quality therapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with elements of theology, prayer, and meditation, which we found to be appealing.

Experience with Christian Counseling at The Enlightened Mind

For individuals interested in Christian counseling, The Enlightened Mind offers a unique approach. Their sign-up process includes a survey that delves into your Christian denomination, the importance of prayer in your life, and whether you prefer sessions infused with biblical wisdom and prayer or a more clinical approach. This alignment with deeply held beliefs can bring a sense of ease throughout the therapy journey.

“I was truly impressed by my provider’s blend of clinical expertise and biblical wisdom. It was evident from our initial interactions that faith played a significant role in her approach,” shared a tester of The Enlightened Mind’s Christian counseling, a mother seeking to integrate her faith into therapy sessions.

We appreciated the level of care shown by most therapists at The Enlightened Mind, as many were willing to accommodate us in their schedules even if they initially had no available slots. This personalized approach made us feel valued and supported. However, there was a rare instance where a therapist missed a session and was unresponsive to messages. Nevertheless, the swift transition to another therapist who was communicative and empathetic ensured a positive experience.

As part of our evaluation process, we conducted a survey among 100 users of The Enlightened Mind’s Christian counseling services to gather feedback on their experiences.

The Enlightened Mind Review: Couples and Individual Relationship Counseling

Our team of six individuals tested The Enlightened Mind’s services for couples and individual relationship counseling in various locations. Based on our experience, we found it to be a favorable choice for couples therapy. The therapists displayed professionalism and expertise, offered practical tools for enhancing communication between sessions, and were attentive to our specific needs, including responding to messages outside of scheduled sessions.

Specialized Counseling Options

Although we did not explore The Enlightened Mind’s faith-based counseling services, we observed that clients have the option to request a Christian counselor during the registration process. This feature is particularly beneficial for Christian couples seeking counseling tailored to their beliefs and values. We appreciated the therapists’ responsiveness and flexibility in scheduling sessions that accommodated our preferences, even if it meant adjusting their usual availability. Moreover, we received prompt responses to our inquiries within a 24-hour timeframe. The therapists utilized a diverse range of therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and emotionally focused therapy (EFT), which are known to be effective in helping couples overcome challenges.

The Enlightened Mind User Feedback on Regain

During our experience with The Enlightened Mind, there was one instance where we felt uncomfortable with a therapist due to assumptions and biases. Furthermore, the short session times, typically lasting 30 to 45 minutes, were not sufficient for addressing complex couples’ issues. When tough issues were brought up without adequate time for each partner to express themselves, therapy sometimes led to more conflicts once the session ended. To fully benefit from The Enlightened Mind, it may be necessary to find a therapist who can accommodate multiple sessions per week to address all your needs effectively.

Grace Wellness Center Review

The Enlightened Mind has not conducted a review of Grace Wellness Center yet, but we found it noteworthy due to its Christian foundation offering counseling and coaching services, including spirituality-based counseling. This platform stands out for providing faith-based life coaching for individuals and couples, emphasizing a biblically-based approach.

One of the positive aspects of Grace Wellness Center is its holistic approach to well-being, focusing on maintaining a healthy lifestyle encompassing body, mind, and soul to support overall mental health. Additionally, clients have the opportunity to see a pastor for spiritual guidance, allowing them to address multiple needs in one convenient location.

On the flip side, Grace Wellness Center only provides therapy and in-person coaching services in Pennsylvania, limiting access for individuals in other locations. The center offers pay-as-you-go sessions, including in-office, video, and phone options, catering to clients who prefer flexibility over committing to a subscription. With a small team of 23 employees, clients may find it easier to receive assistance or address any concerns promptly.

The Enlightened Mind: Christian Therapist On Demand Review

While we didn’t personally test Christian Therapist On Demand, it is worth mentioning for its wide range of resources available, including music, podcasts, worksheets, videos, and mental health guides. These additional resources go beyond traditional therapy and promote self-responsibility and education, empowering individuals to take control of their mental health outside of therapy sessions. One admirable aspect of Christian Therapist On Demand is its mission to reduce the stigma around therapy within the Christian community. With a tagline that emphasizes the compatibility of faith and therapy, “You can have Jesus and a therapist too,” this platform aims to make therapy more accessible and accepted among Christians.

Support for Challenging Conditions

The Enlightened Mind offers support for various challenging conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), personality disorders, addiction, and anxiety. Both couples and individuals can receive therapy for these issues. Additionally, there is an option to request a prayer and send a personalized message to specify the intention, providing a thoughtful gesture.

The Enlightened Mind Review: Pricing and Plans

When exploring The Enlightened Mind platform, we noticed the absence of a Statement of Faith, which can be a point of concern for some users. While some may prefer clear standards, others appreciate the flexibility it offers. Additionally, we found inconsistencies in the depth of information provided on different web pages, suggesting the need for a more cohesive and streamlined approach to sharing resources on the site.

Best Free Website: Chatnow

Chatnow is a free platform that connects users with Christian peers who provide 24/7 support. By simply entering their name and the issue they’re facing, users can quickly access peer support. This service can be beneficial for individuals who may not have access to traditional therapy, helping them combat feelings of isolation and despair.

Key features of Chatnow include:

  • Peer support from fellow Christians
  • Assistance for various issues like debt, addiction, stress, and trauma
  • 24/7 availability
  • Free of charge
  • An app that offers biblical guidance
  • Disclaimer: Chatnow does not offer therapy or counseling services
  • Peers providing support do not have formal training
  • Communication is limited to messaging; no phone or video chat options available

Chatnow: An Alternative Support Option

Although Chatnow was not personally tested, it is worth mentioning as a valuable resource for individuals lacking mental health support and seeking spiritual guidance. Chatnow serves as an online chat platform tailored to Christians, offering the opportunity to engage with a Christian volunteer to address various concerns.

While Chatnow does not provide professional mental health services, it enables users to connect with a Christian volunteer promptly, 24/7. By simply providing your name and the topic you wish to discuss, you can initiate a conversation with a volunteer. Common topics include financial struggles, substance abuse, addiction, trauma recovery, excessive worrying, and feelings of isolation. Although seeking therapy from a qualified mental health professional is ideal for these issues, receiving compassionate support can be invaluable if therapy is not accessible or if additional assistance is desired.

Chatnow: A Source of Support and Connection

It’s beneficial that The Enlightened Mind also provides a newsletter and articles covering various topics such as guilt and connecting with God. Additionally, The Enlightened Mind offers an app called MeetJ, which can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store. This app guides users through the Book of Mark and offers daily readings.

While The Enlightened Mind may not be a substitute for professional mental health treatment, it is important to recognize that therapy may not be accessible to everyone due to financial constraints. Engaging in conversations in a secure environment can alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation commonly experienced by individuals seeking therapy.

The Importance of Peer Support

We have not conducted a formal survey of Chatnow users; nonetheless, we understand the significant role that peer support can play. For individuals who cannot access conventional therapy or who would benefit from connecting with someone who has walked a similar path and faced similar obstacles, peer support can be incredibly valuable. Knowing that there are others who understand your struggles can provide a sense of camaraderie and support.

The Enlightened Mind: GoodTherapy Review

GoodTherapy stands out as an excellent and extensive directory of therapists, including Christian therapists, catching our attention for its diverse offerings. Our experience testing GoodTherapy was highly positive, as we found it user-friendly and efficient in connecting us with a therapist who we quickly developed a good relationship with. One of the notable aspects we appreciated was the availability of both in-person and online clinicians who specialize in treating a wide range of issues such as ADHD, addiction, anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma.

We Liked The Enlightened Mind’s Search Function

We appreciated the ability to search for Christian therapists specifically on The Enlightened Mind platform. By filtering for location and selecting “Christian or Pastoral Counseling” under the “Common Specialties” tab, we were able to generate a list of clinicians. We were particularly impressed by the option to search for therapists offering free consultations and sliding scale fees, as these factors are crucial in finding the right therapist. The detailed therapist bios also stood out to us, providing ample information about each therapist’s specialties, expertise, and a personal introduction to give insight into their personality.

Issues with The Enlightened Mind’s Search Function

Despite the positive aspects, we observed that the search function on The Enlightened Mind platform can be inconsistent at times. Search results may vary, and it is not always clear how a clinician is related to the search criteria used. Nonetheless, overall, we found the therapist search process to be relatively straightforward on The Enlightened Mind.

Other Companies We Considered

In our evaluation, we also looked into Cornerstone Christian Counseling and MyCounselor.Online. However, these options were not recommended due to their adherence to stringent ethical guidelines that may not align with the LGBTQ+ community’s needs, potentially hindering LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking therapy.

Guide to Selecting the Ideal Online Counseling for Christians

Who Would Benefit from Online Christian Counseling?

Online Christian counseling can be a suitable option for individuals facing obstacles such as scheduling conflicts, distance limitations, work commitments, or transportation issues that make attending in-person sessions challenging. It can also be a good fit for those who prefer various communication methods, including messaging, journaling, worksheets, audio chats, and live video sessions. To ensure a smooth experience, make sure you have a stable internet connection and sufficient speed to prevent any call drops or interruptions. Additionally, it is essential to prioritize privacy during your counseling sessions.

If you are unsure about the benefits of therapy, especially if you are already receiving pastoral counseling, it is crucial to recognize that while both can be helpful, therapy is specifically designed to address mental health issues using evidence-based techniques. Dr. Marschall emphasizes that while religious counseling may benefit some individuals, attempting to substitute therapy with it can be harmful. Unfortunately, some churches advocate for religious counseling over secular therapy, potentially hindering individuals from seeking support for their mental well-being. Engaging in Christian counseling or therapy with a qualified professional can provide faith-based encouragement alongside evidence-based mental health treatment.

It is important to note that online therapy is not suitable for emergencies and may not be appropriate for individuals experiencing psychosis or suicidal thoughts. Christian counseling services may also not be inclusive or supportive of individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Affordable is Online Counseling for Christians?

Generally, online counseling for Christians is more cost-effective compared to traditional in-person therapy. However, the pricing structures may vary among different online therapy providers.

Some online therapy platforms follow a subscription-based model, where clients pay a fixed monthly fee for a specific number of therapy services, such as messaging with a counselor or participating in video sessions. On the other hand, certain platforms offer a pay-per-session option, which tends to be pricier than subscription-based models but still more economical than traditional face-to-face therapy. The cost of pay-per-session Christian online therapy typically falls between $55 to over $195 per session.

What Does Online Counseling for Christians Include?

Christian counselors, like all counselors, must meet the same educational and licensing standards. This means that online counseling for Christians can address a wide range of issues, similar to secular counseling. The specific topics covered will depend on the therapist’s expertise and training.

One distinction is that Christian counselors may be more inclined to incorporate spiritual elements like prayer and biblical references into their therapy sessions. It is essential to understand your preferences and communicate them effectively to your counselor to ensure you receive the support you need.

Exploring the Contrast Between Christian Counseling and Biblical Counseling

Christian counselors implement similar techniques used by secular therapists, including psychodynamic and behavioral methods. On the other hand, biblical counselors solely rely on the teachings of the Christian Bible for their counseling practices. While Christian counselors may hold professional licenses, biblical counseling does not mandate any formal certification.

Are There Christian Counseling Resources for Married Couples?

Various options and techniques are available for Christian marriage counseling.

“The Enlightened Mind’s” “25 Best Christian Marriage Resources to Help Your Marriage Thrive” offers a curated list of resources such as book recommendations, blogs, podcasts, and workbooks aimed at providing active support for Christian marriages.

Where Can I Find Free Christian Counseling?

Regrettably, limited options exist for obtaining free Christian counseling online. One alternative is Chatnow, a free Christian peer support service; although, it does not enlist licensed mental health professionals. There are strategies available to reduce therapy costs, and it is possible that your church or local community offers counseling services at no charge, with accommodations for virtual meetings.

How We Tested and Reviewed Christian-focused Online Therapy Services

In this study, The Enlightened Mind examined Christian-focused online therapy resources, assessing them based on services provided, mission statement (including their stance on LGTBQIA+ matters), and pricing. Our focus was on resources offering Christian mental health counseling rather than biblical counseling, which does not mandate the provider to be a licensed mental health professional.

We distributed surveys to 55 companies and gathered feedback from 100 current users of each platform. Additionally, we analyzed 27 online therapist directories by surveying 100 users of the service, conducting interviews with therapists listed on the directories, and reaching out to each company for further insights. We also explored various Christian counseling-focused companies, resulting in a comprehensive set of qualitative and quantitative data on the user experience across different platforms.

Our evaluation criteria encompassed the registration process, therapist qualifications, user interface, range of therapy modalities available, session duration, subscription choices, average pricing, value for money, and the average percentage of users willing to recommend the service to others.
